Going belowground: burying anthropomorphic biases on gustation and olfaction

چکیده
Chemical signaling underpins behavioral interactions among organisms in the soil. Understanding chemical communication soil requires a paradigm shift methodology and perspectives compared to aboveground ecosystems because olfaction gustation, accepted modalities of chemosensation aboveground, may not accurately represent To fully understand soil, it is essential consider how properties, such as moisture, pH, adsorption, affect transport perception semiochemicals. De-anthropomorphizing study can avoid potential biases, particularly systems, where distinctions between gustation are confounded by heterogeneity environment its effects on mobility signals. In this perspective, we first explore confounds dichotomy with hypothetical but ecologically relevant examples. Then examine anthropomorphic biases ecology have influenced ecology. Our examples discussion prepared primarily reference arthropods. We conclude discussing seven future research directions outstanding questions. The premier example system investigators should anthropomorphisms when studying Research further efforts towards developing unified view that could apply all environments occurs.

Olfaction and gustation abilities after a total laryngectomy
BACKGROUND A laryngectomy affects many of a patient's functions. Besides speech and respiratory-tract problems, olfaction and gustation problems can also have an influence on the quality of life. The aim of this study was to find out how often various nasal problems and decreased gustation appear after a laryngectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and five laryngectomized patients (9 women...

It is known that both smell and taste functions decrease with aging. However, some clinical questions remain, such as the independence of each sensation loss and the correlation between a person’s actual sensory loss and awareness of the loss. In this research, we investigated both the olfactory and taste functions of aged subjects together with their awareness of sensation loss. Effects of ana...
متن کاملGustation genetics: sweet gustducin!
Two recent studies, the second of which is reported herein, provide evidence that genetic variation in the sweet receptor subunit, TAS1R3, and the second messenger, gustducin (GNAT3), affect the ability of people to correctly sort ascending concentrations of sucrose. These findings raise questions about how variation in the TAS1R3 and GNAT3 gene shape the human sweet tooth and its unwelcome con...
